RARE SCHOOL OF FASHION
The Rare School of Fashion was launched in September 2015 in Liverpool City Centre and was co-founded by Vice President of Fabletics (co-founded by actress Kate Hudson) Shaun Kearney. Shaun is Lead Patron of the school and also in charge of curriculum development and the internship programme at this unique vocationally-focussed school.
The school has places for 25 exceptional students with an eye for fashion, design or merchandising to unlock their potential and either gain a qualification or study intensively on a one/two year programme depending on age and experience. With a strong emphasis on business and online fashion retailing, The Rare School of Fashion is the first of its kind outside London and seeks to provide hands on opportunities for the North-West and indeed further afield.
Clare Wilson, head of popular local accessory brand Nook and Willow is head of the programme and along with Sarah Holden and their assistant Gillian Bennett lead a team of industry professionals including local designer Kirsty Doyle and Sylvia Davies who has extensive experience having begun her career with Ossie Clarke, Alexander McQueen, Koji Tatsuno and Bella Freud working in couture for over 20 years. The team also includes, Sarah Fuller, Stephen McNally, Michelle Lynch, Nicola Carragher and Becca Corner who are experts in Fashion Business, computer programmes, Interior Design, Pattern Cutting, Design, Garment Construction, Photography, Styling, Buying, Historical Context, Visual Merchandise and Fashion Illustration amongst other things. All staff are experts in their field and still work extensively in the industry. We also have an extensive master class programme where students benefit from outside guests.
What to expect:
The course syllabus covers all aspects of the industry giving our students a realistic understanding of the world they are entering into. They are given the opportunity to develop their strengths and showcase their work with an in-house catwalk, large public show scheduled for the end of the year.
The Rare School of Fashion will be hosting interviews for its next intake of students from January 2016. Requirements for admission are: a minimum of 5 GCSEs (grade C or above in Maths and English), a portfolio of design (fashion designs not essential) and an ambition for the fashion industry.
The school is linked to The Rare Trust which is a registered charity and offers the same high quality training and access to scholarships and industry placements as it’s Performing Arts sister school. In summer 2016 Fabletics funded three students on an all-expenses paid trip to Los Angeles for 6 weeks to work alongside Shaun Kearney in his offices and learn about all aspects of the industry!

Shaun Kearney Patron of the School says:
“I wanted to launch Rare School of Fashion in order to give something back to my hometown, and to establish Liverpool’s place on the international fashion map. The city has so many young fashion devotees, but there seemed to be a lack of opportunity.
“That’s what I want to overcome with Rare School of Fashion. I want this to be a powerhouse of young, fresh industry talent: a place recognised for its originality, authority and quality.
“I really enjoyed coming into the school and critiquing the brilliant work that is being produced and inspiring the students to keep on improving. I’m going to carry on mentoring them, and encourage them to learn the skills, stay creative, and help them find their unique sense of style.
“Together, we’re going to show the world that you don’t need to be born in Manhattan or Milan to make it big in the world of fashion. Under the guidance of the team of designers at Rare School of Fashion, I am confident that they are going to go far. The competition is no doubt fierce, but not as fierce as their drive to succeed.”
