AUDITION PREP

Thank you for applying to Rare Studio and the very best of luck for your up-and-
coming audition.

Auditions are scary, especially if it is for a school that you desperately want to go to
and sometimes nerves get in the way. We want to try and eliminate this and for you to
be as comfortable as possible during your time with us, so here is some useful
information which will hopefully put you at ease!
Our team are experts in their field and are looking for students who we believe can
progress either into further training after Rare or go straight into employment. The key
thing to remember is that we are looking for potential over experience! This means
that if you have had very little training before your audition we don’t care! Our priority is
to ensure that you are willing to learn, are passionate about your art and are willing to
work hard to achieve the results we require and to meet the expectations of the course
you are applying for.
Top tips for the day
• It is easier said than done but try not to be nervous. Treat the day like a workshop
and learning experience. Remember we are looking for bodies and voices we can train
as opposed to already being the best they can be! We are here to teach you and you
are here to learn. We want to see how you process information, the corrections you
are given and how you apply them to your work within the session.
• Perform! Above all we are looking for a spark which makes you connect with an
audience. At this point, that is far more important than whether you have memorised
your full monologue, can hit a top C or your leg is by your ear at the ballet barre.
Performing is key! Be confident and commit to everything you are given. Be brave,
take risks!
• Ask questions. If there is something you are not sure of or need clarification on, ask.
Don’t suffer in silence. Your director or choreographer wants to help!
• Make friends. Be nice to the people in your group and try to chat and get to know
them. Chances are you will see them at other auditions so it’s always nice to see a
friendly face. We want to work with team players and those who show kindness to
each other.
The audition day
Arrival: The building will be open from 11:30am, please arrive on time but not before.
Auditions will start at 12pm prompt so please account for this with travel into the city centre.
You may be asked to stay behind for a short interview with the principal. A request for
an interview has no bearing on whether you will be offered a place or not.
ACTING
Acting students are asked to prepare a short, modern-day monologue which is either
devised or pre-existing which may be redirected by the audition panel. Own clothing –
no specific requirements. You will be able to leave after your monologue and will not be required to stay for the duration of the day.
MUSICAL THEATRE
Musical Theatre students will be expected to prepare a solo musical
theatre song to go to a backing track. MT students must also participate in a ballet
class as part of the dance audition (see timetable below). Girls, please wear your hair
in a bun, ballet tights and a leotard for the audition. Boys with long hair please wear a
headband, unitard or leggings and a vest and ballet shoes. If you do not have ballet
uniform don’t panic! Wear something comfortable that will show the lines of your body.
If you are new to ballet, again, don’t panic! As explained earlier we want to see
potential over experience and a willingness to learn.
DANCE
You are required to participate in a 2.5-hour class where you will learn a variety of
styles including ballet, contemporary, lyrical and commercial. Please bring appropriate
clothing. Girls, please have your hair in a bun for ballet and wear ballet tights/leotard
and shoes. Boys can wear a unitard or leggings and a vest with ballet shoes. There will
be a short break between classes to change. Again, we are looking for potential over
experience so if there is a style you are less familiar with do your best, listen to your
corrections and apply them.
